Water Leaks Inside the Home: A Guide for Tenants

If you discover a drip or leak in your home, such as in the bathroom or kitchen, it’s crucial to act swiftly and effectively. Water leaks can range from a minor inconvenience to a significant emergency, potentially causing damage to a property and belongings.

  2. Identify the source of the leak.
  3. Notify your Landlord or Agent.

Immediate Steps

Remember, it’s important to act quickly when you discover a leak to prevent further damage.

First, turn off the water using your stopcock to prevent the leak from getting worse. Usually, the stopcock will be located on the ground floor of your home, under the kitchen sink. After turning it off, turn on the cold water tap until it stops running to drain the pipes.

Then, check where the leak is coming from. If the water leak is obviously being caused by an appliance like your dishwasher or fridge, then the appliance is likely at fault. Turn it off and check your warranty. But if it’s a bigger leak from a water supply pipe, then you’re going to need a professional.

Reporting the Leak

If you’re dealing with a water leak in your house, the best course of action is usually to call a plumber. However, if you are renting the property, then the landlord will be responsible for maintenance.
